TWO TASTINGS FROM THE CROWS NEST

August 26th in the year of our Lord, may he bless those who blaze new trails, for we did, 2004.

This was a day for an experiment. The mighty Nemsis and the intrepid Devoid sallied forth to taste in a pub environment. It has been done by the 'Committee' before but not quite in this way. On the last occasion we took our ballots to our local and had patrons fill them out. This of course gave the two of us plenty of ammunition to insult and otherwise bellittle these ignorant lumps. In a new pub with no one about that we weren't sure would not beat us about the head and shoulders if we got a little personal we had no one to pick on but each other. This is the result. The Pub in question was The Crows Nest, Prospect St., Newmarket, Ont. A fine little Pub with an English style bar. We tasted two different brews and I shall put them both on the same page.

Tetley's Bitter,
England

Yes that's all I know about it and it wasn't tea, believe me!

Nemsis:
empty glass, good.
"A classic English style bitter, relatively mild. Nice bitter aftertaste, full malt flavour with good blend of hops to keep it bright tasting."
Being his usual obnoxious self when he asked where we could have a cigarette, since the cigarette Nazis had struck there as well, he was told to use a back door and watch that it didn't slam behind him. I translated that to mean don't let the door hit you on the ass as your leaving. Ho Ho!

Devoid:
empty glass, good.
"Hoppy! Very muggy day and this hits the spot. Nice nose, hop comes through. Nice amber colour, slightly bitter finish."
The bar-tender explained to me after his nibs had left that if the door slams one is locked out and he didn't want to see that happen to me, but not to worry about the other guy.
(Webmaster's Note, (As I recall, it was you who got us locked out by not paying attention to the bartender, me, or any of another half dozen people out there who yelled "Watch the door". I admit, grudgingly, that you did watch the door as it closed and locked us all out!))

Boddingtons Pub Ale,
(Cream Ale),
England

Devoid:
1/4 glass, fair.
"Sweet creamy start with almost no nose. Leaves a sweet coating on the front of the tongue. No after taste to speak of."
By the by, 'The Crows Nest' has a different type of glass for evey one of their imported drafts.

Nemsis:
1/4 flass, fair.
"Very mild, very slight sweetness. Creamy mouth feel. Very mild bitter after taste. You could drink this as a session beer with no trouble."
I'll say it again. You would drink any kind of alcoholic beverage as a session libation and you often do!
(Webmaster's Note, ( Damn Right! ))

Stay tuned for next weeks episode: The boys are back to the 'Committee'!, but will they be welcomed or scorned?
